I have heard him say many times that the jobs created for infrastructure creates millions of jobs. Those millions of jobs come not just from "shovel ready" positions, but for the trickle down of jobs that are sparked by those infrastructure projects. Those jobs start with "shovels" and then boost the attached industries that are needed to supply the hardware, the material, even the accountants that companies hire to manage the money they have for infrastructure, and much more beyond that. No, she's not a character. Right now, she's just a description of a person on paper. There is no characterization. The person is two dimensional and completely flat. We know nothing about her. She has no past, no present, no future. Heck, she doesn't even have an AGE!

Names are the last things you need to work on. It's a typical novice mistake. You want your characters have cute names as though you were naming babies or puppies. You decide what their hair looks like and what color eyes they have, but you forget the most important thing - WHO THEY ARE!!

You need to start with a strong character study. Really get to know this person. If you were in a class of mine, I would have you do a complete study for me - minus a name. Then I would discuss the character with you. What does she like for breakfast? What's her favorite subject in school? What would you buy her for Christmas? What is her dream car? Who is her favorite actor?

Can you answer all those questions - and more - about your real life best friend? Of course you can. Well-meet your new best friend. If you are going to be writing about this person, you have to know them as well as you do your best friend. You have to be able to know them well enough so that you would know what they would do in a situation ---aka your story. And that doesn't have diddly to do with what their name is. It has everything to do with who they are and what their life is like.

Everyone has a past. When I was a kid, my parents took me to this place in New Hampshire. They made me climb up this mountain then decided to tell me there were snakes up there. Here I was stuck up at the top, and had to climb all the way down, terrified of running across a snake. From that day forward, I cannot even watch a snake on TV. That is something that if I was writing a character might influence the way she acted in a situation. For instance, she meets a great guy, likes him a lot. He invites her to his place for drinks. He has a huge tank in the living room with 2 boa constrictors in it. Bye. End of romance. See?

When you have fleshed this girl out and made her three dimensional, then start thinking of names. I would no more allow someone at YA to name my characters than I would have come here and said "I just had a baby boy - someone name him for me." This character is your child. Nobody should name it for you.

Personally I use the site Behind The Name to choose names. I like my characters' names to relate to their personalities. Therefore, I study the meanings of names. I am also a tremendous believer in harmonics of words and the name has to have the right ring to it for the story. For last names I use the US Census Bureau's List of Surnames. It has every surname in America on it. If I need an international name, I just Google "French surnames" or "Japanese Surnames" ... whatever I need.

Now get busy on this character. Give birth to a person - not just a paper doll. Pax-C
